Rapidly replace Fossil Fuels now! 2 new books show how!
Renewable energy is surging ahead in many countries; shamefully Britain is in danger of being left behind.
1. No Miracles Needed – How Today’s Technology Can Save Our Climate and Clean Our Air, Mark Jacobson
Mark is a top-level US energy scientist whose initial concern about air pollution launched him into a long career researching and promoting 100% Wind, Water and Solar energy solutions.
He gives many examples of technical and commercial progress in renewable energy applications:
- by 2020 there were 600,000 electric buses on the road, 98% of them in China.
- the largest stand-alone electric vehicle in the world in 2019 was an enormous dumper truck operating in a Swiss quarry. It uses electric battery power to climb to the top of the quarry, where it is filled with ore, doubling its weight. It recharges its battery by regenerative braking as it descends, so can work all day for free!
- pick-up trucks in USA, ferry boats in Scandinavia and Kerala ….
Much of Mark’s work has been producing and collaborating in the implementation of ambitious roadmaps to 100% renewable energy for US cities and states. These show that transition is not only doable but cheaper, and results in a wealth of good jobs.
2. Manifesto
Dale Vince
Dale is a self-taught motor mechanic, inventor, and successful entrepreneur. His first commercial venture was mounting a wind generator on a truck at the Glastonbury Festival for people to recharge their mobile phones at £1 a time. He went on to found Ecotricity and set up a string of charging points for electric cars at motorway service stations. All the profits go into renewable energy development. He bailed out his local low division football club when it ran into financial difficulties, and the fans there all enjoy vegan burgers.
He argues that Britain’s energy is dysfunctional. Capitalisms supposed to be based on independent providers competing on price, quality, and service, but the oil and gas companies operate a cartel, rigging the market by manipulating and restricting their supplies to ensure the highest prices and huge profits. Th price of energy from gas or electricity is tied together, so that when gas prices soar, electricity soars with it, though its production costs have not changed.
Britain is surrounded by natural energy resources; our tides are among the highest in the word; wind, waves and sea currents are very strong. The sun pours energy on us even in our northerly latitudes. We have the potential to be energy independent, free from exploitation by Putin, the Saudis, and their ilk.
